The Arts of Place Artists

Lucy Bergman

Artist Statement

Lucy is an artist who uses film and words to explore various relationships; the relationships people have with landscape, the built environment, their past, future and one another. Despite creating work that is somewhat abstract in form and at times magical realist in nature, it is important to Lucy to develop relationships with local people during the research process of her projects and underpin her work with the narrative of real-life.

Lucy also works with a number of schools to improve children’s emotional intelligence through artistic expression.

The Belvedere Films

A series of short films that explore and celebrate the connection that people have with Bradford’s parks, inspired by the memories and experiences of the people who use them.  Lucy has also collaborated with artist Noah Rose to design and create a miniature cinema space called 'Belvedere' a unique and intimate setting within which to experience the films.

Films are showcased on the BBC Big Screen in Centenary Square and inside 'Belvedere', Bradford Urban Garden.

In the past few years he has made several films about water and natural phenomena, and (with the help of a NESTA Fellowship) has created a series of lectures reassessing photographic pioneers such as Lavater and Daguerre. Simon is active in museum and gallery education, with projects for the Brontë Parsonage, Florence Nightingale, York Castle and Victoria & Albert museums, as well as Harewood House, Impressions Gallery and Huddersfield Art Gallery. He is among 5 artists and writers commissioned by Pennine Prospects to explore the watershed landscapes of the South Pennines over the next 3 years. Whispering Echoes

If Bradford could speak, what would it say?  If people's real feelings about Bradford were aired, what would they sound like?  Whispering Echoes is Larna Campbell's response to her Bradford based research project 'Under the Surface.'  This public performance will be exploring and expressing elements of Bradford's past, present and future as it traverses the city centre, selecting its audience at random and inviting you into its world of the unheard, unspoken of and forgotten.  The performance will also be supported by a sculptural sound installation in the Fabric Pop Up Art Space in Centenary Square.
